English Crewel- "Bird and Berries" with Phillipa Turnbull

May 31st and June 1st, 2008

Accomplishments Needlework is pleased to offer this two-day class of 17th century English crewel techniques, taught by Phillipa Turnbull of The Crewel Work Company.  The class project is a reproduction of a design from a crewel work hanging at Eyam Hall in Derbyshire, England.

You will stitch your piece on Jacobean linen twill woven in Scotland exclusively for The Crewel Work Company, with Appletons English crewel wool.  On the first day of class Phillipa will concentrate on basic techniques with an emphasis on shading.  Then on Sunday you will learn to work over some of these completed sections with embellishment stitches, which are unique to Jacobean era crewel embroidery.  Phillipa discovered these techniques while researching the textiles at Eyam Hall, and will be teaching them for the first time at a workshop there in April.  The class will make its debut in America at Accomplishments!

You may sign up for Saturday only if you prefer, for only the basic stitching lessons.  Or sign up for both days for the basic stitches plus instruction in embellishment techniques.    The first day of classes will begin at 10 AM and end at 4:00 PM.  Then from 4 – 6 there will be an informal lecture by Phillipa, with tea and scones for refreshments and plenty of time for shopping and chatting.      Class on Sunday will be from 9 AM until 3 PM.

To sign up for this class, please call or stop in at the shop.  This event will be popular and the class size will be kept small, so reserve your place soon!

CLASS FEE:

2 day class (Saturday & Sunday)- $250.00

1 day class (Saturday only)- $185.00

Fee includes the full sized kit from The Crewel Work Company, with printed linen twill, Appletons crewel wool, needles, and complete instructions for all stitching.

Crewel Class with Judy Jeroy  - SOLD OUT!!

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

9:00 a.m.— 4:00 p.m.

We are thrilled to announce that Judy Jeroy will be teaching a crewel class at Accomplishments on Tuesday, March 18, 2008!   Judy is an internationally known crewel embroidery designer, teacher, and author of Creative Crewel Embroidery published by Lark Books.   She is an EGA Graduate Certified Teacher, a Certified Needlework Judge, and current chairman of the Crewel Master Craftsman program.  No doubt many of you have learned crewel embroidery from Judy's EGA group correspondence course "Crewel Confidence" which has been responsible for much of the resurgence of interest in this traditional and beautiful form of needlework.

I can tell you from personal experience that a crewel class with Judy Jeroy is an educational and fun experience, and I am very glad that she has agreed to come and teach in Charlottesville.  Judy is designing the class project – a pair of house finches sitting on a flowering dogwood branch – especially for us!  Judy is known for her realistic crewel birds, including the chickadee depicted on the front page of our Autumn 2007 newsletter.  I am confident that our finches will be just as delightful and just as much fun to stitch! (We'll post a photo as soon as it is available.)

The class will be most suitable for stitchers with some crewel embroidery experience, but Judy is very patient so please don't think that you must be an expert.  Whatever your ability, you are sure to learn something from this class.

Includes class materials – linen twill and Appletons crewel wool

Please note that space is limited.  We expect the class to fill up quickly, so if you are interested please do sign up as soon as possible.  A deposit of $35.00 is required to reserve your spot in the class.
