Traditional Slate Frames

These wonderful slate frames are now better than ever, with a very strong,non-stretchable webbing and comprehensive lacing directions for

canvas, crewel and linen.  Designed by and produced exclusively for Access Commodities, they are made in the USA of solid maple.  This slate frame design is based on an 18th century engraving from L'encyclopedie Diderot.

Slate frames are great for any type of needlework where a very taught ground fabric is desirable, including canvas work, crewel embroidery, stumpwork and goldwork.  Pictured here is a slate frame laced up with the Traquair Dragon from Historic British Needlepoint.  For his project I have used 12 inch Horizontal Bars and 24 inch Vertical Side Slats.

Accoutrements- Pins!

Now on our Accessories page, we have five different typs of straight pins, plus fork pin and safety pins, presented in re-usable plastic containers.  The clear lids screw on and off, so your pins won't

go flying everywhere when you pry the top off!

I like the Super Fine Glass Head pins (shown center) for crewel embroidery.  They are perfect for pinning up the excess fabric when using either a hand-held hoop or a seat frame.  These pins are fine, smooth and sharp; they are longer than regular straight pins but not as long quilting pins.

October 2008-

We now have Appletons wool kits to go with the "Traquair Herbals".  These gorgeous canvases are reproduced from Elizabethan era canvas work at Traquair House in Scotland.  Like the Traquair Woodblocks and Florals, the Herbals were worked as "slips", which were designed to be cut out and applied to another ground fabric.  The originals are worked in tent stitchwith wool on a brown canvas ground, and as they have never been used they are in excellent condition considering their age.  For a beautiful, hisorical look we recommend working the motifs in Appletons crewel wool and leaving the background un-stitched.  There are six Traquair Herbals available on our website:

    Acorns                               Vine                        Hazelnuts

  Wild Peas                      Columbine                  Mallow
